Emma's Basketball Experiment

Problem Scenario

I was very curious about what the difference is between a boys basketball and a girls basketball.

Broad Question

What is the difference between a girls basketball and a boys basketball?

Specific Question

Does ball type affect the bounce?

Hypothesis

The boys ball will bounce higher because it heavier.

Variables

Independent Variable:

Ball Type

Dependent Variable:

Bounce

Variables That Need To Be Controlled:

Height, Temperature of room, Surface, and Air pressure

Vocabulary List That Needs Explanation

General Plan

The first thing I would find a wall get a measuring tape. Then get a boys and girls ball bounce them next to the wall and see how high it went, and right it down. Then after make sure that it is all right and see which one is better by bounce.

Potential Problems And Solutions

To measure the height will be a problem but you can have a person stand next to it and measure it.

Safety Or Environmental Concerns

There is not really any safety concerns only if the basketball drops and lands on the persons head that is measuring how high it bounces. There is no environmental concerns.

Experimental Design

Number Of Trials:

10

Number Of Subjects In Each trial:

2

When data will be collected:

The data that I will be ccollecting is how high the basketball bounces and the height I drop the basketball from.

Number of Observations:

1 for each trial

Where will data be collected?:

I will collect the data on a piece of paper.

Background Research

Boys and girls basketballs are made from a inflatable rubber bladder in the inside and then they are generally wrapped in layers of fiber, covered with a tacky surface made either from leather, rubber,or a synthetic composite.See everyone thinks that basketballs are made out of pigskin but they are not they are made out of leather, rubber, or synthetic composite. The black lines on a basketball are called seams and they are helpful in several reasons which are they cover the stiches for the basketball, and they help the basketball players improve the grip and make it easier to dribble and shoot.
The maker of the first basketball is Dr. James Naismith he was born in small Canadian township borderingAlmonte, Ontario. In 1891 he became a physical education teacher at the YMCA International Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts. His proffesor said he had 14 days to come up with a new game that could be played inside.James had time to think and then he thought to himself basketball. So they made it by using the same materials, the first game of basketball was played in Decemeber of 1891. That is how we have basketball today like the NBA and WNBA.
The person who created the NBA is Walter A. Brown and the creator of the WNBA is Valerie Ackerman. Walter A. Brown found the NBA in June of 1946, and the WNBA was founded in April of 1996.What the NBA stands for is National Basketball Association and WNBA stands for Women's National Basketball Association. There is a reason why they called it basketball it is a pretty easy one, its because you are throwing a ball into a basket. So they named it basketball and thats how they came up with the NBA because it is National its Basketball and it is an Association. Same for the womens but it is the Women's National Basketball Association.
Here are some difference between a boys and girls basketbal. The boys basketball is heavier, it is 20 oz and a girls basketball is 19 oz. Also a girl basketball is 28.5 circumference and a boys basketball is 29 for circumference. The girls basketball is different then a boys basketball because the girls have smaller hands, and the men have bigger hands.Another reason why the basketballs are different sizes is because the men have more strength in there hands to have a bigger ball, and the girls do not have a lot of strength in there hands that is why the ball is smaller.
All of the girls and women out there would think that a girls basketball would bounce higher, and the boys and men would think that the boys basketball bounces higher.Well I am a girl and I wanted to know so I did some background research and I hate to admit it but the boys and men are right the boys basketball bounces higher. The reason is because the boys basketball is heavier so that means it will bounce higher and then the girls basketball weighs less so that means it will not bounce high. They made the boys basketballs bigger and heavier because boys or guys have bigger hand and hand muscles, and the girls have smaller hands and smaller hand muscles.

Detailed Procedure

1) You go to a store and blow up the basketballs so they have the same pressure.
2) Get a measuring tape from your dad or the store.
3) Get a piece of paper and right down 1- 10.
4) Then go and find a high balcony or porch and hang your tape measure off and see how high the balcony or porch.
5) Then after record how high the balcony or porch is and drop the basketball.
6)After make a data table about all the heights the ball dropped.

Photo List

I am going to take pictures of the basketball from the balcony.

Data Analysis

My bar graph shows that the boys basketball is the one that bounces the highest. For example at the height of ball dropped stays the same at 9"8, and the boys height it went was 6 feet 1 inch and girls was 5 feet and 3 inches.

Conclusion

The data shows that my hypothesis is correct. The graph shows that the boys basketball bounces higher, about 6ft. each time and the girls bounced 5ft. on average.

Discussion

The data shows that the girls basketball when dropped stayed all in the range of the 5 foot area, and the boys basketball stayed in the range of 6 feet. The relationship between the independent and dependent variable is very strong because the ball type effects the bounce.Yes, I was able to answer the experiment question which was, " Does ball type affect the bounce." The answer to that is yes because the size matters the bigger the ball the higher it will go.The data could help others if they were trying to figure out which one is better for bounce. The people who could use the information in the real world are kids, basketball player, coaches, and etc. To make this experiment better I could do more trials or we can try different types of basketballs like different sizes. My science project is kind of helpful for the people and society because it will tell people which basketball to use, but it is not because some people do not really care about what basketball to use, it is to tell which one is the best for the people who like to know or wants to know which basketball is better.

Benefit to Community and/or Science

This could help people the community by telling them what basketball would work better and which basketball bounces higher. It also is very good for coaches or professional basketball players. For Example: A coach wondering which basketball to practice with there team and it is a boys and girls basketball team,he then said," Oh the boys basketball bounces higher so I will us the boys basketball."So there is an example for the community. Then for science it would help so the if they had to do a science project about basketballs they would already have some information about the basketballs.

Abstract

I chose this project because I always wanted to know if there was a difference in the bounce of the boys and girls basketball, and why is the boys basketball bigger than a girls basketball. What I did to figure out how to do my project is find a wall and got a measuring tape, then go and get a girls and boys basketball and bounce it next to a wall. After I dropped the ball I would see how high it went after that I would right down the height. Then after that I would go over the measurements and see if they are right, and see which basketball bounces higher. What I found out about my experiment is that a boys basketball bounces higher and it is bigger than a girls basketball because boys have better hand muscles, and bigger hands.
